Michigan Mathematics and Science Leadership Network has several Illustrative Mathematics events scheduled for May, just for school leaders. As a school leader supporting the implementation of IM Math, you may have several questions that sound a little like,

  • How do I create an environment to support teachers in successful implementation of IM Math?
  • What do I to look for as I observe in IM Classrooms and facilitate teacher learning? What does effective problem-based learning look and sound like?
  • What is my role as a school leader in facilitating ambitious and equitable mathematics instruction?

If so, our May virtual academies for School Leaders are for you!

May 15

How do we create an environment to support teachers in successful implementation of IM K–5 Math? This session teaches school leaders ways they can support teachers during the initial implementation of IM K–5 Math. Particular focus will be given to prioritized areas that most impact student learning at the beginning of implementation. School leaders will be given tools to focus their teacher support and classroom observations in ways that support teachers in collaborative planning environments.

What does effective problem-based learning look and sound like? School leaders will use video to focus on student learning behaviors in a problem-based classroom, make connections between teacher moves and student learning behaviors, and reflect on how to support teacher learning.

Curious about your role as a school leader in facilitating ambitious and equitable mathematics instruction? This session is for school leaders who are preparing to implement IM 6–12 Math with their teachers or for those of us who are re-engaging with IM professional learner for leaders. In this session, we will examine the key role of instructional leaders in establishing and supporting the conditions necessary for successful implementation of the IM curriculum. The session builds on instructional leaders’ understanding of the problem-based lesson structure and IM’s approach to access and challenge.
